Heather and Justin Gillespie are a married couple, both therapists, and both living with ADHD. Their pregnancy started out smooth, steady, and ADHD-friendly—full of routines, planning, and excitement for their growing family. But everything changed when Heather was hospitalized nearly two months early, leading to a sudden C-section after two weeks of monitoring.
The shift from stability to crisis brought challenges neither of them were expecting. Navigating the NICU while still showing up for their clients required constant emotional regulation, flexibility, and support. Even with all the ADHD tools and preparation they already had in place, this experience pushed them into an entirely new level of adaptation.
For many parents with ADHD, pregnancy and early parenthood already come with unique challenges—from sensory overload to changing routines to the emotional and executive functioning demands of caring for a newborn.
Even in a typical delivery, ADHD can complicate everything from feeding schedules to sleep to staying regulated through big transitions. Adding an early delivery and NICU experience on top of those challenges can intensify everything, revealing just how important strong support truly is.
Their journey enhanced the passion and purpose behind the program they were already building for new ADHD parents. Experiencing these challenges firsthand deepened their understanding of how essential strong support truly is during pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood. Their goal is to help other families feel prepared, grounded, and supported—no matter how predictable or unpredictable the path becomes.
